Report on 81st Jayanthi Mahotsavam as shared by a Devotee:

Eighty one groups of Nadaswaram and Tavil players faced each other in the mandapam forming a passage all the way from the Guru Maha Periava’s Adishtaanam to the Sishya, Pujyashree Jayendra Sarasvati Swami’s Sannidhi. They announced Brahma Muhurtam with gusto, the tunes and vigorous drumming blasting joy over the precincts of the Matham premises. As His Holiness Pujyashree Jayendra Sarasvati Swami stepped out of his room, scores of Suvasinis holding lit karpooram vied to see the Vishwa Roopam. They showered his feet with flowers and received His blessings. His Holiness performed the Karpoora neerajanam at Maha Periva’s adhishtaanam.

His Holiness then went to the Kamakshi Amman temple and performed pooja there. As he was honoured with the ceremonial turban at Adi Shankara Bhagavadpaadaacharya’s Samadhi, the devotees gathered there roared “Jayendra Sarasvati Swamiji ki JAI." Accompanied by Nadasvaram and the grand temple umbrellas.  He was escorted royally as He circumambulated the temple before returning to the Matha.

Along with the Shashtiabdhapoorthy (completion of 60 years) of His Holiness as the Peethathipathi, His Holiness Shree Periavaal has also performed the Vyasa Pooja for 60 years consecutively. This year, 2015, His Holiness had performed the 61st Vyasa Pooja on Guru Poornima the day before and on his 81stJayanthi, performed the Punah Pooja for the Vyasa Pooja for the 61st time. A thronging crowd watched every movement of Jayendra Sarasvati Svami eagerly as he completed the Shodashopachara pooja, offering dhoopa, deepa, neivedhya and karpoora neerajanam.

Necks craned for a glimpse of Him as he passed the seated masses and then sat on the podium for the Jayanthi celebrations. The blessings of Lord Venkateswara from the Tirupathi temple was brought for this occasion. With energetic chanting, Pujyashree Jayendra Sarasvati Svami was honoured with a zari turban, a red shawl, and other special prasadams.

Prasadams from Rameshwaram Thriuvaanaikaaval, Sri Rangam and many other great and ancient temples were presented to His Holiness one after the other.

Soon after, His Holiness released a special DVD set with His Anugraha Bhashanams on Viveka Choodamani and the Bhagavad Gita that was recorded by Shankara TV. His Holiness explains these treatises so brilliantly and eloquently in these DVD’s. He released “Follow the Hindu Sun: Sandhyaa-Vandanam” by Smt. Soumya Aravind Sitaraman. The book was bestowed a Shree Mukham by His Holiness for its articulation with pictures of the important Nithya Karma. Another book, the “Bhaaratha Vaani”, with excerpted nuggets of knowledge from the Mahabharatha for the modern reader was presented by the Sanskrit University for release by His Holiness. All this he did with his usual Grace. The authors and creators felt enormously blessed that His hands touched their work and the first recipients of the released works felt doubly blessed to be chosen to receive them from His own hands.

A kanakaabhishekam and short pushpaabhishekam with beautiful and weighty, fragrant flowers followed. His Holiness Pujyashree Baala Periaval carefully placed one gold coin on a flower and gently placed these flowers on the feet of his Guru to the rendering of the Ashtotaram.

Their Holinesses witnessed the Poornaahudi of the Rudra Homam and blessed the event with their presence.

Later in the afternoon, Sri Devi Prasad, former Principal of Madras Sanskrit College, delivered the Endowment lecture organized by Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya. As His Holiness Shree Periava sat in His aasanam on the stage, the main mandapam reverberated with devotees chorusing, "Pujyashree Jayendra Sarasvati Swamiji ki JAI" and "Kanchi Kamakoti Peethathipathi ki JAI.” He was garlanded and showered with precious stones from the gentle hands of Bala Periaval. Baskets of flowers of various hues followed, showered with care by the devoted and great sishya on his exalted Guru.

His Holiness, Jayendra Saraswati Shankaracharya Swami is the epitome of compassion. This he amply demonstrated by gracing all those who thronged on this day to witness his 81st Jayanthi: He accepted all the offerings, no matter how small or large, and bore the heavy weight of the overflowing affections with a smile.

Bala Periaval's countenance, as beautiful as a full moon, was radiant as He looked upon the Guru from whom He as learnt so much. His caring hands brushed away the weighty flowers that they showered. The extremely gentle and thoughtful way in which Bala Periava placed the floral crowns, garlands of various kinds, materials, sizes and hues that were presented for Shree Periaval by all the devotees is an example of the tremendous love and reverence that one must have for one's Guru. Such love and respect can never be enforced. It pours out naturally. It's very expression is a tribute to the greatness of the preceptor.

In the evening the thanga ther, the golden chariot, was brought out with the vigraham of His Holiness Maha Periaval. Shree Periava, Pujyashri Chandrashekarendra Sarasvati Swami's only disciple who has borne the heavy mantle of uplifting the people of Bhaaratha and preserving the Vedas during extremely challenging times in a unique and unprecedented manner, performed the evening Karpoora Aarati for His Guru.

This concluded the activities of this joyous occasion. The thronging devotees continued to line up to get prasadam and the Akshata from the Vyaasa Pooja from the hands of the gurus till the very end of the day.

After His Holiness left the stage, the devotees scrambled eagerly to get at least one flower that had been touched by His Holiness after the Pushpanjali. They went away with their hearts content with this great blessing.
