Shyamala Dandakam
composed by Mahakavi Kalidasa
Shyamala Dandakam is perhaps the greatest stotra written by the legendary Sanskrit poet Mahakavi Kalidasa in praise of the Mother Goddess Shyamala (the divine embodiment of wisdom, arts, and music).
Kalidasa has employed a unique, majestic poetic style called Dandakam. A Dandakam is a metric form of poetry where lines extend beyond 26 syllables, closely resembling rhythmic prose. In this stotra, the entire composition flows dynamically as a single continuous sentence from start to end, creating an unparalleled sonic and spiritual resonance.
